What To Do When Your TPMS Light is On

If your TPMS light is on, the air pressure is either too low or too high in one or more of your tires. If you’ve fixed the problem, but the light stays on, you’ll need to reset your tire pressure light manually. This could be as easy as going for a short drive—but you may also have to disconnect and reconnect the battery. If you’d prefer to have an expert take care of things, you can schedule service with our Newton dealership at any time.

How to Reset Your Tire Pressure Light

In general, you’ll want to keep your tires between 33 and 36 PSI. You can also find the specific recommendation for your model on a sticker, located in the driver’s side door jamb. If you don’t see the information you need, give us a call at (877) 870-6142. Remember, always check the spare tire when you’re trying to fix a problem with your TPMS.

Air compressors are available at many gas stations in Hackettstown and Hamburg, but we’d be happy to refill your tires here at our tire center as well. Need a tire pressure gauge? Find one at our parts department.

If your TPMS light stays on after you refill your tires, there are four basic ways to troubleshoot the issue:

  1. The sensors need time to reset, and may go off automatically after a short drive. Get on the highway and drive at 50 mph or higher for ten minutes. When you next turn on the car, the light should turn off.
  2. When your car is in accessory mode, but the engine remains off, you can use the TPMS light to reset the system. This button can generally be found beneath the steering wheel. Hold it down until the TPMS light blinks three times, then release. Wait twenty minutes for the sensor to refresh, and the light should go off automatically.
  3. Emptying and refilling your tires may also solve the problem. Start by finding an air compressor, and inflate your tires to 3 PSI above the recommended level. Then, allow your tires to completely deflate. Refill them all to the proper level, and then drive to reset the system.
  4. If all else fails, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery can force a hard reset of the system. Using the proper safety gear, simply disconnect the negative battery cable. Honk the horn for about three seconds to discharge any stored power. Then reconnect the battery and fire the vehicle back up.

If you can’t get your TPMS light to go off using any of these methods, it’s likely that one or more of your tires still doesn’t have the right air pressure! If you’ve checked each of your tires using a gauge, it’s time to schedule service and let us take a look at the sensors themselves.

What Does a Flashing Tire Pressure Light Mean?

A flashing tire pressure light may indicate that the sensor is either damaged or missing. On the other hand, it could also indicate an issue with your vehicle’s battery or electrical system. If you’ve noticed other electrical issues—especially headlights that fluctuate in power—it may be time to replace your battery. Regardless, you should stop into Mercedes-Benz of Newton whenever you see a flashing tire pressure light in your vehicle.
