There’s no mistaking the Mercedes-Benz logo. That distinct circle and 3-pointed star design can be seen on the front of quality luxury vehicles all over the Hamburg area. But, what is the reason behind the design of the Mercedes 3-pointed star? What about the Mercedes-AMG® logo? Why is it different? Let’s dive into the company’s history to discover the Mercedes-Benz logo’s meaning.
To understand the Mercedes-Benz logo’s meaning, we have to look back at one of the parent companies of Mercedes-Benz, DMG. In 1909, the auto company known as Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) was looking for a new logo. Paul and Adolf Daimler, sons of the company’s deceased founder Gottlieb Daimler, recalled a 3-pointed star that their father had drawn on a postcard to their mother in 1872. He had drawn the star to mark the location of the family home, saying that the star would someday shine over the DMG factory as a sign of prosperity. After that, DMG trademarked both a 4-pointed and 3-pointed star design, but went with the 3-pointed star for its new logo.
DMG merged with another automobile company, named Benz & Cie, in 1926. The new company incorporated “Benz” into its name, but decided to dump “DMG” in favor of using “Mercedes”, the name of the daughter of one of DMG’s owners. One of the things from DMG that did survive, however, was the 3-pointed star. The new logo would use a laurel, an element of the old Benz & Cie logo, and combine it with the 3-pointed star. The laurel would later be replaced with the circle we see today.
The Mercedes-Benz logo is all about ambition. The company says that it symbolizes the utilization of universal motorization by Mercedes-Benz to dominate the land, air, and sea (the three points).
The unique Mercedes-AMG® logo has two halves. The left half is the coat of arms of Affalterbach, Germany, the city where the Mercedes-Benz headquarters are located. The right half shows a cam, a valve, and a valve spring, symbolizing the high-performance and quality engineering of the Mercedes-AMG® engine design.
