Premium vs. Regular Gas – What’s the Difference

We rarely see Newton drivers reach for the premium fuel at the gas pump. That’s understandable. Premium gas is unnecessary for most cars. But what about your car? What about Mercedes-Benz vehicles? To answer the whole premium vs regular gas question, it’s important to understand the difference between premium and regular gas.

The Difference Between Premium and Regular Gas

We should get a couple of things straight: Premium gas will not burn more cleanly in your engine. Nor will it increase your gas mileage as you drive along Sussex roads if your car is not tuned specifically for premium fuel. The only difference between premium and regular gas is octane. Premium gas has a higher octane rating, which makes it burn more slowly than regular (though not enough to noticeably increase gas mileage, as we stated).

Premium vs. Regular Gas: Mercedes-Benz Vehicles

Your Mercedes-Benz is a quality-engineered, precision machine, and as such, it’s tuned to run only on premium gasoline. Remember, the difference between premium and regular gas is octane. The less octane in the gas, the faster it burns. Your Mercedes-Benz has a number of sensors in the engine designed to precisely time the firing of the cylinders. Low octane fuel will cause the pistons to fire too quickly, eventually causing serious and even catastrophic damage to the engine. So, use only high-octane gas in your Mercedes-Benz. After all, you wouldn’t want to find yourself broken down somewhere in the middle of Hamburg.

Premium vs. Regular Gas: Other Vehicles

Do you need to use premium gas in other vehicles? It depends. Check your owner’s manual. If the manufacturer requires premium gas, by all means, use premium fuel for the same reasons you would use it in a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. However, if it only suggests you use premium, we recommend you test your car’s performance, comparing both regular and premium. If you don’t notice a difference in fuel economy or in how the engine sounds, it isn’t worth it to use premium. What if the manufacturer doesn’t suggest premium fuel? Then your car will not benefit from premium gas.
