Jump Starting a Car Using an EV

At Mercedes-Benz of Newton, we’re addressing a common question many Sussex EV owners have: Can you jump-start a car with an EV? The answer is yes, and we’re here to guide you through the process. With the increasing popularity of electric vehicles (EVs), it’s important to understand how they can be versatile in various situations, including helping to jump-start another car.

Before we dive into the steps, let’s clear some doubts. Can you jump-start a car with an EV? Absolutely! Electric vehicles have a 12-volt battery just like traditional internal combustion engine cars, which can be used for jump-starting. (Jump-starting another car will also not drain your EV’s battery, as it uses the smaller 12-volt battery.)

Steps to Jump Start a Car with an EV

  1. Position your EV close to the car needing a jump start, ensuring that both cars are turned off.
  2. Find the 12-volt battery in your EV. Refer to your owner’s manual for exact location and access.
  3. Attach one red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  4. Connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of your EV’s battery.
  5. Attach one black clamp to the negative terminal of your EV’s battery.
  6. Connect the other black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s engine block.
  7. Turn on your EV.
  8. Wait for a few minutes, then try starting the dead car.
  9. Once the car starts, carefully disconnect the cables in the reverse order.

Safety Tips

Is it safe to jump-start a car using an EV? It is generally safe when done correctly. For example:

  • Always refer to your EV’s user manual first to ensure it is safe to jump-start another car.
  • Wear protective gloves and glasses during the process.
  • Ensure both cars are in park or neutral and the parking brakes are engaged.
